Toronto Retirement Homes

Retirement Homes are private businesses that are not funded nor regulated by the Ministry of Health. They are, for the most part, operated for profit and provide to the consumer a variety of services such as: accommodation, meals, laundry, house keeping, medical services and personal care.

Consumers are responsible for the cost related to the accommodation and the type of care services chosen, as services from retirement homes are not subsidize. Unlike long-term care homes, prices for retirement homes can range from $1000.00 / month to $10,000.00 / month. In addition to the accommodation cost, consumers are on a user-pay basis for meals, laundry,or assistance with personal care and medical assistance.

Consumers who are going to purchase the services of a retirement home should obtain a "Care Home Information Package". You are encouraged to review the information package before signing any agreement with the business that will be providing the services. The "Care Home Information Package" contains information related to:

type of accommodation and cost
minimum staffing levels
a list of services available and cost
emergency response approach, if any
procedures for dealing with complaints etc.

Consumers who are interested in retirement homes are to apply directly to the retirement home of choice. There is no requirement to provide medical evidence as part of the application process. Applicants, however, are encouraged to share medical information that is of relevance to the care being requested from the home. As some retirement homes may not be fully equipped to address a wide range of medical conditions. Moreover, given retirement homes operate on a user-pay basis for some services, it can be economical for someone with a multitude of medical problems to consider long-term care.

Long-term care is funded and subsidized by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care in Ontario.
